Matthew Sanderson Rae Jr. Obituary
Matthew Sanderson Rae, Jr., a 58-year resident of Manhattan Beach, passed away at the age of 87 on Tuesday, August 3, 2010 in Torrance. Sandy Rae, a renowned probate attorney, was involved in almost every facet of public service. Born September 12, 1922 in Dormont, PA, Sandy had nearly completed his undergraduate degree at Duke University, where he was a member of Sigma Nu, before he served his country during World War II as a 2nd lieutenant bomber pilot in the Army Air Corps. After the war, Sandy returned to Duke, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa from law school and worked for the law school dean. He was the national field representative for Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity and clerked for California Associate Justice Douglas Edmonds before marrying the former Janet Hettman of San Francisco and beginning his 57-year career at Darling Hall & Rae in L.A. An active member for more than 50 years in the State Bar Conference of Delegates, which gave him its Spirit Award, Sandy chaired many committees for that organization as well as for the Los Angeles County Bar Association, which awarded him its highest honor, the Shattuck-Price Memorial Award, in 1990. He served as director of the L.A. County Bar Foundation, received the Arthur K. Marshall Award in 1984, and served on the board of governors and as first vice president for the South Bay Bar Association. Sandy had served as president of the Chancery Club and had been appointed to a life membership on the National Commission on Uniform State Laws. Ever a politician, Sandy co-founded the California Republican League and served for decades on both the party's district and county central committees. Phi Alpha Delta remained a constant in his life; he served as Supreme Justice from 1972 to 1974 and was named to PAD's Distinguished Service Chapter. Sandy had been scheduled to attend the opening ceremonies at his 33rd consecutive PAD convention on the day he died. He is survived by daughters, Mary-Anna Rae, Margaret Rae Mallory (Ryan) and Janet Rae-Dupree (David); grandchildren, Anna Mallory, Matthew Dupree and Alden Mallory; and a sister, Margaret Sanderson Rae. He was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 52 years, Janet Hettman Rae. Visitation will be held on Tuesday, August 10, 2010 at St. Peter's by the Sea Presbyterian Church in Rancho Palos Verdes from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. Services, followed by a courtyard reception, begin there at 3:30 p.m. A graveside service with military honors will be held on Friday, August 13, 2010 at 1:30 p.m., Skylawn Memorial Park, San Mateo, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Phi Alpha Delta Endowment Fund, the L.A. County Bar Foundation, or the Duke Law Annual Fund. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
