Mike, a long time San Pedro resident, was born in San Francisco, California on July 27, 1921 and passed away peacefully at home on March 30, 2013. Mike graduated from Balboa High School in San Francisco and went on to serve his country in the U.S. Navy, stationed in the Marshall Islands during World War II . After an honorable discharge, Mike worked as a commercial fisherman for 23 years. He then went to work for the California Fish and Game Department as a Captain on the research vessel Kelp Bass, and retired after 20 years. Mike was the son of Sam and Mary Lonich and the second born of three children. Mike is predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Jean, and daughter Yvonne. He is survived by his daughter Linda Brymer (Robert) and son Michael (Janet). Mike, who was known as "Papa", leaves behind five grandchildren; Michelle Bianchi (Robert), April Meyers, Lia Lonich, Stephen Lonich, and Kristen Lonich. Papa Mike also has five great-grandchildren; Michael Springer, Ashley Springer, Carson Bianchi, Kara Bianchi, and Yvonna Meyers. Papa Mike was truly one of a kind and his tall tales will live on through the hearts of his family and friends. A chapel service will be offered Friday, April 5, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.
