Michael H. Trapani Obituary
Michael H. Trapani, the patriarch of our family, passed away as he lived his life with dignity and grace on March 26, 2011. He was born September 21, 1909 and lived a healthy and full life for 101 1/2 years. He was the 3rd oldest of six boys. His parents, Frances and Catherine Trapani immigrated to the United States from Trapani, Sicily. Mike was a pre-med major at the University of Wisconsin, but left medical school to help save his father's business during the Great Depression. In 1939, he married Broadway showgirl, Rose Jacoby, his wife of 56 years. During World War II, he served in the Merchant Marines as a chief pharmacist mate, delivering supplies to the Allies in Eastern Europe. After the war, he began his lifetime career with the U.S. Public Health Department as a quarantine officer. They called him "Doc" and he was very proud of his career in which was dedicated to keeping communicable diseases from entering the USA. Mike was a lover of languages and learned much of them working at both the Port of Los Angeles and L.A. International Airport where he met people from all over the world with his gracious and charming ways. He and Rose moved to San Pedro in 1945 and he lived comfortably all of his days in the same home where he and Rose raised their family. Mike was devoted to his faith, a member of Holy Trinity Parish for over 65 years and walked door to door to raise funds to build the original church on Santa Cruz Street. He was an avid collector, traveler and delighted in the simple things in life. But what lit up his face and brought him the most joy was his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Mike was a wise, kind and educated man and anyone who met him walked away feeling honored and respected. He lived a full and rich life knowing he was deeply loved and died a peaceful and contented man. When asked how he achieved such a long and healthy life, his answer was always, "Never worry about anything." He was preceded in death by his parents, his beautiful wife, Rose and 4 of his 5 brothers. He is survived by his son, Michael (Jovan) Trapani; and his daughter, Denise Trapani. He had seven grandchildren, Tricia Rodich, Thomas and Christopher Garcia, Michele (Mike) Zinser, John (Tani) Trapani and Steve and Mark Trapani; five great-grandchildren, Saul, Taylor, Jillian, Sienna and Samantha. He is also survived by his youngest brother, Henry (age 92); sister-in-law, Anna (age 87). A celebration and funeral Mass for the patriarch of our family, Mike Trapani will be held at Holy Trinity Catholic Church on Saturday, April 2, 2011, 12:00 p.m. Interment will be private. Burial to follow at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Holy Trinity School, 209 N. Hanford Ave., San Pedro, CA 90732. These gifts will be used to help establish the "Rose and Michael Trapani Education Fund" which will provide for ongoing financial support for children and families of the school.
