Michael McNerney Obituary
Michael Joseph McNerney

Michael was born on October 3, 1941 in Long Beach, California. He passed away on May 5, 2016 in Torrance, California with his family by his side. Michael was a lifetime resident of the Harbor Area, living in San Pedro, Rancho Palos Verdes, and most recently, Rolling Hills Estates. He attended Seventh Street Elementary School, Dana Junior High School, San Pedro High School and Harbor College. He was owner operator, along with his brother Thomas of McNerney's Mortuary in San Pedro, Ca. His love of his business and community it serves was evident in the many causes he supported. He was a member of the Jaycees and a Lifetime member of the San Pedro B.P.O.E. Elks Lodge 966, serving as Exalted Ruler 1978-1979, where lifetime friends were made during his tenure. In 1998, he and a few of his friends joined together and formed "The National Business Bank", which later became Cal West Bank. In 2003, he worked with a contractor to build his last house and took great pride in its completion. In 2011, after many waltz lessons, he and his daughter Jeanne danced the waltz at her Las Nina's Evergreen Ball, he considered that one of his finest moments: a dancer he was not. He loved to travel, the Moana Surfrider being a favorite destination. Michael felt blessed to attend a 2006 New Years Day Papal mass at St. Peters Basilica with Pope Benedict XVI presiding. He was a fanatic about war memorials and battleship museums, Presidential Libraries and airplane models. He loved to read, loved his dogs, birds, and his cat, Nicky. He also loved his Quarter Horses, his favorite being Carly, taking apples and carrots to her every day. He was generous to a fault, loyal beyond words, and would do anything for a friend or family members. He gave so much and asked for so little. There is so much more that words cannot express, only that he is in our hearts forever, he was a man that was truly loved, and we are at a loss without him. He leaves behind his wife and daughter, Kelly and Jeanne McNerney; brother and wife, Tom and Christine McNerney; aunt, Ruth Lavelle; nephews, Tom (Johnna) and Robert McNerney, Bill (Susan) Ridgway; nieces, Tracy (Rob) Fenty and Holly (Brice) Eckles; cousin, Dr. Nancy Lavelle and 12 great nieces and nephews. Services will be private. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in Mike's name to the San Pedro Elks Lodge 966, Building Fund, 1748 Cumbre Drive, San Pedro, CA 90732.
