Michael Powell Sanders
Michael passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on July 31, 2011 after a courageous battle with melanoma. Michael was born in San Franscisco on January 30, 1938 and is survived by his loving wife of 44 years, Marge; his daughter, Keleigh and son, Damen. Michael spent his formative years in San Jose graduating from Willow Glen High School in 1955. In 1962, he received his Bachelors Degree in Advertising from San Jose State. While in college he was in the Navy reserves and then spent two years of active duty on Guam. In 1962 he accepted a job in Corporate Advertising at North American Aviation in El Segundo. While there, he met the love of his life, Marge and in 1967 they were married. In 1966, he accepted a position as Account Executive at J. Walter Thompson. He enjoyed working at the agency and playing on the their baseball team. He was also a stringer for AP covering all of the UCLA and Lakers home basketball games and boxing events at the Olympic Auditorium. Michael also earned a Master's degree in Communications from Loyola Marymount in Westchester. In 1970, Michael returned to Rockwell and in 1989 he accepted a position with the City of Long Beach's Economic Development Department. He also spent seven years as Special Assistant to the Mayor. Michael consulted for two years and officially retired in March of 2011. Michael was a rabid LA Kings, Angels, St. Louis Cardinals, Stanford and 49ers fan. He was a voracious reader and loved anything pertaining to the Civil War and enjoyed visiting all of the battlefields, with Gettysburg being a favorite; touring it several times and once on horseback. His other great enjoyment came from his many travels and cruises in Europe, Alaska and the Mediterranean. Michael was fitness buff, running and surfing beginning in his teen years. He ran the PV marathon several times, the Honolulu marathon and nine others along the way. Michael never missed a day without participating in an exercise program at the club or swimming at the Elks. Mike will be remembered for his devotion to family and friends, his faith, courage and positive attitude. A Life Celebration for Michael was held on August 13, 2011 at the La Venta Inn with Monsignor Joseph Brennan officiating.
