August 13, 1920 -
May 10, 2013

Mildred C. McRae, 92, passed away on May 10 after a long and happy life in California. The fourth of five children born to Stylenois and Mary Chaconas, Mildred was born August 13, 1920, in Oakland and later moved with her family to Long Beach. As a nine-year-old Mildred's family lived through the 1929 Great Depression. In 1933 her family experienced the Long Beach earthquake that left her high school in rubble. During WWII Mildred was a supervisor at the Goodyear factory that fabricated fuel tanks for military aircraft. After the war she met and soon married Kenneth McRae, and they started their family of three children, Paul, Janice and Laurie. They purchased a small home in South Los Angeles, and in 1961 moved to Gardena, where she lived for 45 years. Mildred was very community oriented. For her work with the local and state PTA she was awarded an honorary lifetime membership by the California PTA. Mildred was a board member of the local Gardena YWCA, and past-president of the Torrance Ladies of the Elks (BPOE). Mildred was a den mother for the Cub Scouts and a troop leader for the Girl Scouts. She was active for many years with Christ the King Lutheran Church in Torrance. Mildred was an avid golfer, belonging to the Alondra Park Women's Golf Club and the Skylinks Women's Golf Club. She played golf every week, walking the courses until she was 84. Mildred was predeceased by her husband, Kenneth, and survived by her sister, Georgia Fernandez, two of her three children, two grandsons and one granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, please consider donations to the Gardena Valley YWCA: YWCA Gardena Valley, 1341 W. Gardena Blvd., Gardena, CA 90247-4827, phone: 310-327-5356, fax: 310-327-0524.
