Milenko Medak Obituary
Milenko "Mike" Medak

November 19, 1934 – June 2, 2017

Mike Medak, beloved son, husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, was born on November 19, 1934 in the small town of Komin in Croatia. His dear mother and father, Mary and Steven Medak, moved their family to the United States when he was five years old. After short stays in New York and Los Angeles, Mike's family settled in San Pedro where he attended Dana Junior High and San Pedro High School. Mike met his "darling sweetheart," the love of his life, Dorothy "Dee Dee" Cunningham, in print shop at San Pedro High School. Mike and Dee Dee were married in 1956 and celebrated 60 wonderful years of marriage last year. They had three daughters – Michelle (Jim) Miller, Sharon (Mark) Karmelich, and Sandy (Nick) Guglielmo – who are grateful and blessed to have him as their father. Mike later had seven grandchildren – Trisha (Mark) Malahni, Jeremy (Jennifer) Karmelich, Ashley (Henk) Edel, Nicholas (Britney) Guglielmo, Robyn Guglielmo, George Karmelich and Mark Karmelich; and five great-grandchildren – Kendall, Camryn, Holly, Madeline, and William. With his family, Mike enjoyed family dinners, pat-a-cake games with the kids, and vacations, especially to 'P.S. I Love You.' Mike was a hard worker – he worked every day from his first job as a paper boy to his 30-year career at Home Savings of America to managing Harbor Central with his great friend, Sal, up until the end of last year. Mike made friends everywhere he went, but cherished the friends who became family to him many years ago. Mike, with his darling Dee Dee, attended Croatian Mass at Mary Star of the Sea Church every Sunday; events at Croatian Hall, Dalmatian American Club, and the Elks Club; and just about every San Pedro community event. Mike is already sorely missed, but the love he gave, the lessons he taught, and the memories we shared will last forever in our hearts. A Rosary and Funeral Mass will be held at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church on Friday, June 9, 2017, at 1:00 p.m., with a burial service immediately following at Green Hills Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Mary Star Church Building Fund. Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com or dailybreeze.com.
