Milla Caldwell Tarr Obituary
Milla Caldwell Tarr

Milla Caldwell Tarr Born January 24, 1929 in Beverly Hills died October 12, 2013 at her home in Rancho Palos Verdes after a short illness. Milla grew up in Beverly Hills on Walden Drive, attended Beverly Hills High School, and went on to attend Elmira and Pomona Colleges, graduating from Pomona in 1952. She also attended Wright McMahan Business College in 1953. Milla met her husband Paul on a blind date in 1951, marrying him on August 22, 1953. They had been married almost 55 years when he passed away on August 8, 2008. Milla and Paul bought their chicken ranch near Warner's Springs, CA in 1956, building the home themselves out of adobe bricks. They sold the ranch in 1960, first moving to Whittier and finally to Palos Verdes in 1962. Milla lived the last 2 years of her life at the Canterbury where she made many friends. She started her career working briefly for the Baldwin Hills School District. She then would use her accounting skills to help Paul in his business ventures, first Financial Forsight, and later their air conditioning business Allen Air. Milla also worked for Williams and Sons Catering at Hollywood Park, and the United Cannery Workers Union in San Pedro before starting her own accounting business in 1980. She operated Accounting Designs for over 25 years. Milla was involved with numerous charitable organizations using her accounting skills to help them help those in need. She was a lifetime member of Las Amigas de Las Lomas, the Orthopedic Hospital Auxiliary, where she helped with the Horse Show fundraiser every year. She was also actively involved with South Coast Interfaith Council and Harbor Inter-faith Shelter for many years. St. Luke's Presbyterian Church was very important to Milla. She had been a member since 1962 when she moved to the Peninsula, singing in the choir, serving as deacon, and being treasurer for many years. She was involved in several women's groups and Bible Study groups as well, and served on music and worship committees. Music played a big part in Milla's life. She played piano as a young girl having her own recital at age 16. She passed on her love of all kinds of music to her children, attending the Philharmonic at least once a year. Milla also attended the Carmel Bach Festival with her dear friend Marie Smith for over 20 years. Milla was preceded in death by her parents, Wiley N. Caldwell and Jean Clarke Caldwell, and her spouse, Paul D. Tarr, Jr. She is survived by her son, Paul D. Tarr III (Bryn); daughter, Colleen Milla Tarr-Hulbert (David); grandchildren, Heather and David Hulbert, and Wesley, Andrew, Lauren and Julie Tarr. We would like to thank Milla's longtime doctors Dr. Webb, Dr. Holtz, and Dr. Boontung for her care over the years, and especially these last few months of illness. We also would like to thank the caregivers at Torrance Memorial Hospital, Lomita Care Center and the skilled nursing facility at the Canterbury who all helped make Mom's final weeks comfortable and peaceful. In lieu of flowers, please send charitable donations to St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, or one of Milla's other volunteer organizations. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013, 1:00 p.m., St. Luke's Presbyterian Church, 26825 Rolling Hills Rd., RHE, CA, 90274. Please sign the guestbook at www.amgambycom.
