Nancy Jean Trowbridge Merchat

September 1, 1924 - April 2, 2012

Jean was born in San Diego to Navy doctor, Stuart J. Trowbridge and his Red Cross nurse wife, Mary Myrtle Weiss. Stuart and Mary met during World War II while stationed in Europe. Their only child was raised in San Diego and earned her bachelor's degree at Stanford University and a master's degree from University of Chicago. Jean returned to the Los Angeles area where she married and lived in San Pedro for over 30 years beginning in 1956. She worked as a licensed medical social worker for the County of Los Angeles and Kaiser Permanente. She is survived by her three children, Margaret and spouse Jim; Frank and spouse, Jennifer; and Roger and his spouse, Mary. She is also survived by 6 grandchildren, Elizabeth (spouse Andrew), Sarah, Krista, Meredith, Katherine and Spencer. Throughout her life, Jean was an avid and adventurous traveler with many trips to all parts of the globe including Latin America, Russia, China, Tibet, Egypt, Europe and every state in the United States. Jean was also an ardent Democrat and loved politics. She also sang in the choir of St. Peter's Episcopal Church. Jean moved to Santa Rosa in 2008 and enjoyed outings with her daughter, including the Saturday Farmers' Market, trips to the coast, and to San Francisco. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18 at 11 am at St. Peter's Episcopal Church on 9th Street in San Pedro, California. Please sign the guest book at www.daiilybreeze.com/obits.
