Nora Lee (O'Sullivan) Humting Obituary
Nora Lee Humting (O'Sullivan), 84, passed away at her home in Redondo Beach, California on January 31, 2011. She left this world with the same unbelievable courage and humor that she displayed in life, especially during her last few months. An optimist to the end, when asked how she was, she would reply, "I'm still here." Nora was born and raised in Redondo Beach. Her family owned the land that now is the site of Redondo High School's athletic fields. She attended St. James Catholic School, Redondo High and El Camino College. Nora served on Redondo's alumni association and reunion committees for several years until her death. One of her greatest pleasures was being able to grant scholarship money, on behalf of alumni, to deserving students. Even though the scholarships weren't large, she always said "Every little bit helps." Her love of Redondo Beach continued throughout her life. She served for 11 years on the Redondo Beach Historical Commission and 3 years on the board of Casa de los Amigos, which provides low cost housing to seniors. For many years she volunteered her house as a precinct-polling place as well as volunteering to serve on the election board. She worked as a crossing guard for the Redondo Beach Police Department, and later retired from the purchasing department of the Torrance Unified School District. Never idle, she served as the wedding coordinator for St. James Church for 17 years. One of Nora's favorite activities was volunteering at Little Company of Mary Hospital. Nora proudly did that for 18 years and only stopped when she was no longer able. She lovingly crocheted hundreds of baby booties and gave them out to the expectant mothers as she conducted the Expectant Parents' Tour at the hospital. Nora's volunteer activities didn't stop there. She served as president of Bishop Montgomery's Mother's Club, St. James Council of Women and Our Lady of Victory Court at St. James Catholic Church. Nora also loved to help plan the activities for the St. James Catholic Golden Age Club. She was given a sweatshirt that read "Activities Director Extraordinaire". Nora met her husband, Nick, at Columbia Steel. The day she first saw him, she came home and told her sister, "I just met the man I'm going to marry." They were happily married for 54 years until his passing in 2006. Nora is survived by her two daughters, Mary and Joan; her sons-in-law, Bill and Chris; and her 5 grandchildren: Jaclyn, Jeffrey, Erin, Casey and Chelsea. Her brother, Michael O'Sullivan; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends will sorely miss her. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Rice Mortuary on Friday, February 4, 2011 from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with the rosary being celebrated at 7:00 p.m. The Mass will be held at St. James Catholic Church on Saturday, February 5, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
