Perry Spanos Obituary
Perry Spanos

Age 84, of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA passed away at home with his loving family by his side September 6, 2016 after a long illness. Perry is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Christine, and three loving adult children, John, Dean, Joy, and dear grandson, Pericles Spanos. Perry was born in Athens, Greece, devoted son of John and Lambrini Zes Spanos. Perry's father immigrated to the U.S. in 1914 and unlike most immigrants of the era had the opportunity to earn a BA at Boston University and a Ph.D. from Harvard in English Literature. He became a U.S. citizen and returned to Athens to open an English language school. Nazi occupation in 1941 forced young Perry and his parents to flee to his mother's Peloponnesian village, Levidi. Perry's father died during the war. In 1949 Perry re-located to California and earned his BA and MA degrees in International Relations from USC. Upon graduation he was employed by the U.S. Treasury Department but was drafted into the U.S. Army Signal Corps. Following 2 years of military service in Germany, he resumed employment at the Treasury Department. He, Christine, and their young family lived in Hong Kong for 6 years. In 1969 Perry became international sales manager for Applause, an LA toy importing company; he was proud to have brought fame to The Smurfs. Perry loved to travel the world with his beloved Christine at his side. A member of St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, he served a term as parish council treasurer. Perry's warm smile, thoughtfulness, wit, wisdom, and gentleness will be greatly missed by his loving family and devoted friends. A prayer service in celebration of Perry's life will be held at St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church, 722 Knob Hill, Redondo Beach, on Saturday, September 17, at 12:30 PM. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the USC School of International Relations. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits
