Peter Ferryman Obituary
Peter R. Ferryman

Peter R. "Dutch" Ferryman passed away peacefully at the age of 94 on February 6, 2016, with his family by his side. He was a 51-year resident of Palos Verdes Estates, where he and his wife Dorothy ('Dottie") raised their family. Dutch was active in the community, playing tennis into his 90s at the Palos Verdes Tennis Club. For decades, he enjoyed the camaraderie of playing with the Thursday-morning regulars at the club, many of whom became the closest of friends.

Dutch certainly earned his "golden years" of retirement. He grew up in Omaha, Nebraska during the Great Depression, graduating from Omaha Central High School. He then volunteered to serve his country during World War II, and completed his pilot training with the Army Air Corps in 1943. He flew 60 combat missions with the 12th Air Force as a command pilot in North Africa and Italy, earning the Distinguished Flying Cross.

Following the war, he flew more than 5,000 additional hours in 35 different military aircraft, including the P-51, P-38, P-47 and P-63. He served as a rescue pilot in Alaska, and was among the first Hurricane Hunters. While stationed in Denver, Dutch met Dottie, a stewardess and Drake University graduate, who would soon become his wife. Dutch and Dottie spent the early part of their marriage stationed in France and Germany, before ultimately settling in Southern California. They were married for 57 years before Dottie passed away in 2009.

Throughout his life, Dutch expressed gratitude to the Air Force for the opportunity to earn his bachelor's degree and MBA from Ohio State University. In 1963, Dutch retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel, and began a successful career as an aerospace marketing executive. He went on to play a critical role in the Apollo and Space Shuttle programs for Rockwell International, and later traveled the world as an international marketing consultant.

Dutch is survived by his children, Marjorie Gwinn (Palos Verdes Estates, CA) and Peter Ferryman (Portland, OR), and his grandchildren, Michele, Katie and Tess. A private ceremony will be held for Dutch at the Riverside National Cemetery. Sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com.
