Philip Felando Obituary
Philip J. Felando Nov. 18, 1930-Nov. 2, 2015

Philip (Phil) J. Felando passed away peacefully at home on Monday following a brief illness. Phil was born in San Pedro on November 18th, 1930 to parents August and Susie Felando and spent his entire life in the community, graduating from San Pedro High School in the Summer Class of 1948. He served in the U.S Air Force from 1951 to 1954 stationed in San Angelo, Texas and throughout his life spoke proudly of his many experiences in the military. Following his honorable discharge, Phil returned to San Pedro and began a 35 year career as a commercial fisherman, following in the footsteps of his father who had captained many successful fishing vessels. Phil's fishing career culminated as captain and managing owner of the M/V Elsinore, a tuna purse seiner based in San Diego. Through successful financial and real estate investments, Phil was able to retire early and enjoy such varied activities as the San Pedro Pessimists Club, Toastmasters, holding board positions with the Dalmatian- American Club, and a Chairman of the Board position with the Star-Harbor Federal Credit Union. He regularly played pinochle and socialized with a wide network of friends who gather at the San Pedro Fish Market on Sunday mornings for coffee and conversations about family, friends, politics and many other topics. Cooking for family and friends, enjoying sports, especially football, several road trips across the country and many short excursions to Las Vegas with his older brother, Augie, also kept him busy and active during his 30 year retirement. A devoted family man, Phil married Thelma Ursich on November 17, 1956 and raised a family in San Pedro near a large extended family in the local area. A highlight of their lives together was a 50th Anniversary Celebration attended by over 100 guests followed by a family cruise to the Mexican Riviera in 2006. Phil's involvement with family was extensive and he was quietly generous with many people and organizations assisting with financial support, volunteer work and elder care of his relatives . He was especially close to his two granddaughters and was their beloved after school sitter for many years. Phil's friendly manner, good humor, generosity and kindness will be missed by many. Phil is survived by his beloved wife Thelma, his son Phil (Mary); daughter Suzan (Jacqui), granddaughters Nancy Fulkerson (Taylor) and Amy Felando, Brothers August and Gregory (John) Felando; Brother-in-law Anthony (Ernestine) Ursich and Sister-in-law Anne Bogdanovich. Numerous Nieces, Nephews and Cousins. Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the Dalmatian American Club Building Fund, or Good Samaritan Hospital Heart Fund. Visitation will be on Sunday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at McNerney's Mortuary and a Funeral Mass celebrated on Monday, November 9, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church. Interment will be private. Please sign the guestbook at mcnerneysmortuary.com or dailybreeze.com.
