Passed away early Monday morning, June 8th 2015 at home peacefully with family close. Born in Ischia, Italy on April 30th, 1926, Philip moved to America in 1959, by way of Ontario, Canada, and settled in San Pedro, California with his first wife, Anna and their three young children. Philip, always embracing an enthusiast love for life and service to others, was the long-standing president of the Italian Catholic Federation, a loyal pilgrim to the Mater Dolorosa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre, a volunteer at Christian Care and an active member of the Mary Star of the Sea Parish. Philip's devotion to his faith was remarkable, a true humble servant of his Lord. First immigrating to America as a horticulturist, he later became a fishmonger, while enjoying his favorite pastimes, winemaking, organic farming, and constant memorable Mazzellabrations. He is survived by his loving wife, Jean Mazzella, his 3 siblings, Maria Impagliazzo, Stanislao Mazzella, and Joe Mazzella, his children, Mike (& Jorja) Mazzella, Libby (& Andrew) Ghio, Luisa (& Terry) Zuccola, Anthony (& Darlene) Costa, Peter (& Judy) Scognamillo, Francy Barcot, Joe (& Eileen) Scognamillo, and Mary Grace (& Anthony) Piro, his grandchildren, Phillip Mazzella, Nicholas Mazzella, Natalie (& Mark) Huerta, Michael Mazzella, Francesca Zuccola, Terry Zuccola, Jolene (& Marc) Meskin, Tommy (& Michelle) Barcot, Audra Scognamillo Heimlich, Nichelle Barcot, Danielle Torres, Peter Scognamillo, Joey scognamillo (& Theresa) Scognamillo, Anthony ( & Zoe) Scognamillo. , Vincent (& Kelsey) Piro, Tony Piro and Alyssa Piro. and many great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He will be deeply missed as a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend. We will always remember his strength, his Grace, his Courage and his unconditional love for all. Visitation will be held on Thursday, 4–7 pm followed by a Vigil Service at 7pm at McNerney's Mortuary. Celebration of Life Mass will be offered on Friday, June 12, 2015, 10:30 a.m. at Mary Star of the Sea Church. In lieu of flowers please consider donating to the Mater Dolorsa Passionist Retreat Center in Sierra Madre or Mary Star of the Sea High School.
