Richard Brown, Jr.

Richard Brown Jr. (Pops), 90, died Wednesday, May 11, 2016 at Kaiser Permanente in Harbor City, CA., after suffering cardiac failure near his home in San Pedro. He leaves his wife of 66 years, Katherine (Harris) Brown; his daughter, Sharon Lawler and her husband Steve; his son Rick Brown and his wife Marie; 5 grandchildren Rick Lawler (Lil Rick), Tina (Lawler) Doner, Nicole (Brown) Scognamillow, Nicholas Lawler and Katie (Brown) Bates; 12 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild; several nieces and nephews; and many close friends. Born and raised in De Witt, Arkansas, Junior is the son of Richard and Mary (Watson) Brown. In his early years, Junior would help his father driving trucks delivering produce and hay in and around De Witt and neighboring cities. Prior to graduating from high school, Junior convinced his parents to allow him to follow his brother Bud and enlist in the navy. He served during WWII in the South Pacific as a radioman with the Little Beaver squadron on the destroyer Converse and an aircraft carrier the USS Block Island. He finished High School graduating upon his discharge from the Navy and also attended flight school receiving his license to fly small aircraft. Later, Junior spent his career in service to his country as Staff Sergeant in the Army National Guard for 25 years. He met his wife Katherine Harris in May of 1947, they married in September of 1949 and moved to San Pedro Ca. in January, 1950. Dedicated to family, friends and profession; he was a Member of the Izaak Walton League of San Pedro. An avid hunter and exceptional shooter with both rifle and shotgun. In his free time, Junior spent his time in the garage reloading, fixing/repairing firearms of all make and model.
