At approximately 10:00 a.m. on the morning of April 6, 2011, Richard Manuel died at Torrance Memorial Medical Center, where he volunteered on a weekly basis. His family was at his side. Richard was born in Fredonia, New York, the youngest of 9 children. He moved to California in 1962 with his high school sweetheart and 1953 Grape Queen Sally Valvo Manuel. The Manuel's resided in Torrance, California. After a 2-year stint in the Korean War with the US Army, "Doc" as he was known, enrolled at Purdue University where he gained his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering. He worked in aerospace for the duration of his working life, and retired from TRW in 1995. Richard was an avid reader, loved poker and all sports, particularly the Los Angeles Lakers, and along with his wife Sally, never missed a game by the world champions. Richard is survived, in addition to his wife Sally, by four children, William, Patricia, Michael and Jeffrey, along with 4 grandchildren, Austin, Nina, Kira and Alia and many loving nieces, nephews and cousins in upstate New York. Services will be held in California at a date and time to be announced. In lieu of flowers, Richard and Sally would ask you to tell someone you love them.
