Richard Morrison Coulston Obituary
Richard Morrison Coulston passed away on June 7, 2010 at the age of 92. He was born on August 28, 1917 in Carroll, Iowa to Mary Rachel and Leslie Tilden Coulston. A descendant of the American statesman Samuel Tilden, he enjoyed growing up in the heartland but left at 18 to study engineering at the University of Minnesota, St. Paul. He pursued a Masters degree at USC where he met a lovely redheaded journalism major, Jeanne MacDonald Walsh. They married in Santa Barbara in 1941 and moved to San Diego where he served as a Captain in the Air Corps, later earning the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force. Jeanne and Dick had three daughters, Barbara, Kathy, and DeDe. The budding aerospace industry brought them to Manhattan Beach and he pursued a long and rewarding career, including 24 years with the Aerospace Corporation. Dick truly enjoyed life as a South Bay resident for over 60 years and was happiest when surrounded by family. His passions included sailing, archaeology, world travel, beach life, fine arts, reading, and entertaining. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Jeanne Coulston; and a large, loving family including Barbara (Dewey) Struble, Kathy Brunick, DeDe (Tony) Lombardo; grandchildren, Michael (Emily), Dewey, and Kathy; sister, Mary Caryl (Milt); special daughter, Carol (Dan); and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. In addition, Dick will be dearly missed by many cherished friends he has known and loved for over 40 years, as well as newer ones. A private family service was held in July and Dick's family would greatly appreciate any donations in his name to support animal protection or environmental preservation. Thank you for enriching our lives, RMC - we will love and remember you always. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
