Robert B. Johnson, Jr.

April 21, 1917 - January 6, 2014

Sadly, on Monday, January 6, 2014, surrounded by loved ones at Torrance Memorial Hospital, Robert Johnson was peacefully called home by his Heavenly Father. An only son, born in Pueblo, Colorado to Ruth and Robert B. Johnson. In 1940, Bob graduated from the University of Colorado (Boulder), with honors in Engineering /Mechanical /Metallurgical, five Honorary Societies and was an Allstar second baseman. With a job offer from G.E., Bob headed to Lynn, MA.. Great job, but a lonely engineer. Fast foward 2 years, Jini (former Virginia Markham) was wearing a lovely wedding band. In 1951, Bob was chosen to design, build, equip, staff and manage a 67,000 sq. ft. (500 man) Materials Laboratory, with expanded requirements in electronics, in Evendale, Ohio. 'Packed our bags, and little Rick, just in time to welcome baby sister Andrea. From 1951 - 1964 Cincinnati stole our hearts. Made great friends. In 1964, this time in California, Bob was Director of Marketing for Rocketdyne, Atomics International and the Aerospace Division. In 1969, as Senior Marketing Executive, Corporate Staff North American Rockwell. An important contributor to Aircraft Engine Research, he helped design the first jet engine and the Saturn 5 Rocket Booster. He was considered for inclusion into the 2007/2008 Cambridge "Who's Who Among the Country's Executives and Professionals." After Rockwell, Bob worked with son Rick of Rick's Welding Inc. Rick's tower of trusses and lighting controls were in consoles Bob made for the 1984 Olympics Closing Ceremony in LA, thence, traveled worldwide to major Rock Concerts. His interests and achievements were many, but his unconditional love of family trumped it all. Survived by his loving wife and children, Jini (married 70 yrs), Eric and Andrea; (Rick's) Rosie, Kristina, Ryan, (great) Mikayla Johnson; (Andrea's) Shannon, Jay, (great) Marley, and Avonlea Seifried. A very special person. A wonderful life.
