Robert Franklin Pruett, Pastor Emeritus of The Harbor Church in Lomita who holds the distinction of being the longest serving Pastor of any church in the Harbor-South Bay area passed away Monday, August 22, 2011. The eldest of five children, he was born in Luling, Texas on July 18, 1928 to Cecil and Hazel Pruett. He entered full time ministry in the late 1940's and married Naomi McWhinney on September 7, 1950. They pastored churches in Vernon, Texas, Avenal and Westchester, California in addition to serving as missionaries to the Philippines where Pastor Pruett built numerous churches. In 1964, he took over as Senior Pastor of The Harbor Church where he served for 47 years. Under his leadership, the church experienced significant growth. In the early 1970's, several acres of land were purchased at the corner of 254th and Western in Lomita for a new sanctuary, Christian education facilities and eventually a private school. Over the years, the church has continued to bring the hope found in Jesus Christ to each succeeding generation. Pastor Bob's commitment to missions work has resulted in hundreds of churches being built around the world. Pastor Pruett is survived by his brother, Fred Pruett of Houston, Texas; wife, Naomi; daughter and son-in-law, Marlene and Gary Woodworth; son, Terry Pruett and granddaughter, Ciera Pruett. His son, Bobby passed away in 1955. Services will be held at The Harbor Church on Thursday, September 1st at 10:30 a.m. Interment will take place at 2:00 p.m. at Green Hills Memorial Park in San Pedro.
