Robert Gjetley Obituary
Robert Gjetley, better known as "Bob the Plumber" passed away peacefully February 13, 2011, ending his courageous battle with cancer. He was born and raised in Decorah, Iowa, and visited there often. He moved to the Long Beach area in the 60's. Bob was a multi-faceted man who wore many hats. He was a proud longshoreman, retired from ILWU Local 13 after 35 years of service. He was a real estate investor, financial advisor/planner, gold miner, fireworks supplier, cigarette vendor, liquor distributor, teacher, supporter of less fortunate souls, Harley Davidson rider, an incredible plumber, and most of all, your best friend. Bob would do almost anything to earn a dollar or help a friend, he always had an agenda. For many years he and his brother, Donnie, operated the pumpkin patch and Christmas tree lots for the Boy Scouts, as well as doing plumbing repairs at the Boy Scout camps. The Plumber loved to ride his Harley and traveled all over the United States, including five trips to Sturgis. His helmet says, "I rode mine". He loved to travel by any means including the train, plane, and cruise ship. The Plumber would not hesitate to help someone down on their luck. He delighted in giving others opportunities to succeed on their own, pushing education and jobs. He never procrastinated about anything! He always looked out for his friends the best way he knew how. The Plumber was a lion, a man of great strength and courage. He was strong-minded and wanted most things "his way". He was proud of his Norwegian heritage and enjoyed life to the fullest. He has etched a place forever in our hearts and will truly be missed. We love you Plumber!
