With great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, and grandfather, Robert L . Kurtz, a 56 year resident of Rolling Hills Estates on July 6, 2012. He was born on February 28, 1923 in St.Louis, Mo. to Robert E. Kurtz and Carolyn Kurtz. He graduated from St. John the Baptist High School in St. Louis and moved with his family to Rosemead, Ca. where he opened a radio repair shop in his garage to support his family. In July 1943 he entered the Army with the 42nd Rainbow division. He was sent to Standford for special training in advanced electronics and finished his basic training at Camp Gruber, Oklahoma. His company was shipped overseas and beached at Marseilles. He received the Bronze Star for meritorious achievement in action on January 16, 1945 near Sessenheim, France. His division opened the gates of Dachau concentration camp. At war's end, he met his future wife, Hildegarde in Austria. She joined him in California and they were married on July 19, 1947. He taught returning veterans television electronics while completing his own degree in electronics engineering. In 1949, he joined North American Aviation. While there he was the Engineering Manager for the B-70 Electronics and later for Apollo. He then became Chief Project Engineer for the B-1 Bomber. After retiring in 1982, he started his own company Micro-Z. He invented a typewriter that produced Morse code. With his son, Steven he developed and published a software program Direc-Tree. He joined the North American flying club and earned an instrument rating. Bob was an avid Ham radio operator and inventor. He was also an equestrian. He was a volunteer for the California Sheriff's Mounted Posse. He was preceded in death by his sister, Carolyn Tripp of Florida and his beloved daughter, Michelle Kurtz. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Hildegarde; his son, Steven Kurtz (Brenda) and grandchildren, Lauren Kurtz and Bryan Kurtz. He will be deeply missed by his many friends and his brother-in-law and sisters-in-law in Austria. Robert Kurtz passed away the morning of July 6, 2012 surrounded by his family.
