He earned the Purple Heart and two Bronze Stars for his World War II service. Bob was employed as a research scientist at Aerospace Corporation in El Segundo from 1960 until he retired in 1985. While at Aerospace he authored multiple articles and obtained numerous patents for his work with supersonic wind tunnels and hydrogen lasers. Bob is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jewel; his brother, John Varwig of Saint Louis, MO; his sister-in-law, Betty Hulquist Sherritt of Boulder, CO.; his three daughters: Jana Varwig (Mark Laughlin) of Baltimore MD, Chris Varwig Wylie (Robert) of Palos Verdes Estates, CA., and Eleanor Varwig Gage (John) of Vienna, VA; four grandchildren, Jennifer Gage, Jamie Gage, Robert Laughlin, Julia Laughlin; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be remembered as the epitome of a fine man with a big smile and generous heart who loved his family dearly. We will miss him always. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 30 at 3:00 pm at St. Peters by the Sea Presbyterian Church in Rancho Palos Verdes, CA.
