Robert Searcy Ramsay

Robert Searcy Ramsay, 90, died Oct. 4, 2015 at a local hospital after a short illness. He had been a resident of Southern California since 1968, living in Torrance and Lomita before moving to Redondo Beach last year.

Robert was born April 14, 1925 in Colorado Springs, Colorado to Lola and Russell Lee Ramsay. Both his maternal and paternal families were direct descendants of settlers who came to America from Scotland and France in the late 1600s.

Robert was educated in Colorado Springs public schools and graduated from Baylor University in Waco, Texas. He continued his graduate studies at the New Orleans Theological Seminary where his emphasis was on church music. He served as soloist, choir director and organist for churches in Louisiana, Virginia, Colorado and California. He also sang with operatic groups in Colorado. He had been an associate member of the American Guild of Organists.

His professional life began as a professor of English and dean of men at a private college in Virginia where he was also on the faculty of Virginia Polytechnic Institution. He later enjoyed a career in hotel management including the Broadmoor Hotel in Colorado Springs and, after moving to Los Angeles, the Beverly Hills Hotel and Marina City Club. He retired as office manager of a Southern California manufacturer of specialized equipment for racing cars.

He was a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of San Pedro where he also volunteered with its Meals on Wheels program. As a retirement project, he taught English as a Second Language through the Los Angeles Public Library Adult Literacy Program. He also traveled extensively throughout the world.

Robert is survived by his sister, Mary Ann Keating of Redondo Beach. Viewing will be on Saturday, 3 to 8pm at Green Hills Mortuary. Graveside services will be scheduled during the next week at the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Colorado Springs.
