Robert S. "Bob" Hood Obituary
Robert (Bob) S. Hood passed away on April 29, 2011 at his home in Palos Verdes Estates. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Bob will be remembered for his generosity and love of yachting, flying and classic cars. He was 87 years old. Bob's parents emigrated from Prestwick, Scotland to Lennox, Massachusetts where Bob was born on October 29, 1923. He spent his formative years on Long Island as the son of a chauffeur. Bob entered the Army Engineering Corps during WWII, where he spent time in the European theatre. Honorably discharged from the Army after three and a half years of service, Bob attended New York University on the G.I. Bill and studied mechanical engineering. After graduating, he moved to California and started an electronics company, WEMS Inc., with his business partner Gene Rove. Of note were WEMS's contributions to the space race, with one of its components sitting on the moon to this day. WEMS recently celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in Hawthorne, CA. Bob worked into his eighties, and when not at WEMS enjoyed collecting and restoring classic British cars and flying, which he did for forty-three years through Baja and California. However, his greatest passion was spending time on his yacht, the "Bagpipe". Bob was a longtime member of King Harbor Yacht Club, where he served a term as Commodore and contributed generously to the youth sailing program. He enjoyed skippering the "Bagpipe" to Catalina Island, surrounding islands, the Sea of Cortez and an eventful trip from South Carolina through the Panama Canal to Redondo Beach, California. He always took with him family and friends. It is with great sadness that we announce Bob's passing after his ten year battle with Alzheimer's. He is survived by hiswife Joann; son, Ron; daughter, Nancy; and grandchildrenn Meghan, Ryan, Morgan, and Travis. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the King Harbor Youth Foundation or Alzheimer's Foundation of America. A celebration of Bob's life will be held at noon on Tuesday, June 7, 2011 at King Harbor Yacht Club in Redondo Beach. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
