Rodolfo "Rudy" Chavez, 87, made his journey to be with The Lord on Monday, December 26, 2016. He was surrounded by his family at his home in San Pedro, Ca. Rudy was born on February 27, 1929 in San Pedro, Ca. to Melesio and Magdalena Chavez. He was a life-long resident of San Pedro, beloved son, brother, uncle, father, grandfather and friend. His beautiful smile, friendly personality, generous, loving heart, great sense of humor, easy-going attitude and relentless optimism are just some of his most admirable qualities. Growing up during The Great Depression he was always hard-working and dedicated to providing for his family from as early as 8 years old. Rudy began his career in the cargo industry at age 17 as a merchant seaman and member of the Marine Fireman's Union (MFOW) 1947-1984. Rudy worked as a longshoreman for 59 years with the Pacific Maritime Association (PMA) 1957-2016. In 1982 he became a member of the ILWU Local 13, remaining active for 34 years until his death. Rudy loved life and was grateful to God for many his blessings. Rudy is survived by his wife of 22 years, Lupe Covarrubias, their children, Ralph Chavez, Rudy Chavez, Gloria Chavez-Wilder, Marisol Chavez, Mariana Chavez, Willie Chavez (Cherry), grandchildren, brothers Salvador Chavez and Mitch Chavez, sister Jessie Pearson, nieces, nephews, and extended family. He is preceded in death by his parents Melesio and Magdalena Chavez, sisters Cora Floren, Gloria McPheeters, Esther Ramey, Connie Neal, Eleanor Burich.
