Ronald Cantu, a lifetime resident of the South Bay, passed away peacefully and on his own terms, on February 11, 2016. His final days were spent surrounded by close family and friends at his daughter's Long Beach home. He was born on March 20, 1949 in San Pedro and graduated from San Pedro High School in 1967. Ron was a Vietnam Veteran who loved his country and served as a Sergeant in the Marine Crops from 1968-1972. He attended Harbor College, where he met and married Patty Boblak. He graduated from UCLA, worked at Hughes Aircraft for 17 years, and went on to work as the finance manager at Saturn of Torrance. "Big Ron," as he was often called, was an avid cyclist, racing for Team Velocity at the Carson Velodrome, and participating in numerous races. He loved his family very much and loved taking pictures until he was no longer able. Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Manuel and Pola Cantu; sister, Martha Palacios; nephew, Eddie Palacios and niece, Michelle Palacios. He is survived by his son Ronn Cantu, grandson Evan, daughter, Lisa (Eduardo Huante), grandsons Eddie, David and Jacob, and numerous brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews, his former wife, whom he stayed friends with, and his in-laws. The Service for Ronald Cantu will be held on Saturday, February 27th at 12:00pm, at Green Hills in the Historic Church. Graveside service with military honors will immediately follow.
