Ronald Frederick Saunders Obituary
Ronald Frederick Saunders - May 3, 1930 till March 17, 2017

Ron Saunders died surrounded by family at home in Pleasanton, California on March 17, 2017. Beloved husband of Gayle, father to Sue (Alan), Melanie (April), Michele (Mark), Marcy (Brian) and Stan (Kathy), and grandfather to 11, we are grateful for such a long, happy, and productive life, even as we miss him.
Ron was born in Creighton, Nebraska and grew up on family farms in Nebraska and in Peterson, Iowa. Ron
attended Iowa State University, where he majored in General Science. He joined the ROTC, and upon graduation, entered pilot training. He was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force in 1951. Ron served with distinction during and after the Korean War as an F-86 fighter pilot while stationed in postwar Germany and Tripoli as part of the 53rd Fighter Squadron 36th Wing. Honorably discharged in 1955 with the rank of Captain, Ron joined United Airlines in 1956 where he was a pilot for 34 years and as Captain flew the B-727 and DC-10 before retiring in 1990.
Ron was married for 25 years to Mary, who met him while a stewardess with United, before her untimely death in 1985. Ron met and married Gayle in 1989. Ron and Gayle lived in Pauma Valley, CA for fifteen years, and their home on the golf course became the center for family adventures, including Coyote Bridge, golf cart rides, and kids camp. They moved to Pleasanton in 2013 to be closer to their children and grandchildren. We still see him sitting with family and friends, a smile on his face and his signature vodka tonic with a twist of lime by his side, as he listens to or tells a good story.
Celebration of Life service will be held April 1, 2017 at Stoneridge Creek, 3300 Stoneridge Creek Way, Pleasanton, CA, 94588 (925) 227-6810. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Hospice, 6377 Clark Ave Suite 100 Dublin, CA, 94568. Please sign guestbook dailybreeze.com/obits.
