Rose Arzuman Obituary
Rose Elena Arzuman

Affectionately known as Mama or Nana, was born on September 9th, 1921 in El Salvador. She came to the United States for the first time when she was 16 years old for the opening of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. Ten years later she returned to that city, worked at Levi Strauss with her cousin, fell in love with a man in uniform - Robert (Papa) Arzuman, and was married. Being in the US Army, they moved to San Pedro, bought a home, and raised six children; Mireille/Mimi (Rick) Navarre, Robert/Bob (Mary) , Anne Marie (Kevin) Drabinski, Gloria (Dana) Sarandria, Steven (Mary), and George. As an Army wife, she would pack up the children (even a cat) and follow Papa with his deployments to Europe and throughout the States. They always kept their home in San Pedro, and from 1969 to the present, remained in this Port Town. Mama spoke Spanish and English. She also learned to speak French for her mother-in-law. She had an open door, and a place at the table for anyone who came to visit. She loved to celebrate a birthday, a holiday, and a family meal. Her house was also home to dogs, cats, and at one time-- a parrot. She delighted in her eleven grandchildren; Allison, Cadence, Claire, Christopher, Danielle, Noelle, Alexandra, Lauren, Amelia, Joshua, and Anthony. She was blessed at the age of 94 with a great-grandchild, Cole Robert, whom she sang to and taught a clapping game. To this day, Mama could remember everyone's name, their children's names, and their pets' name. As a breast cancer survivor, Mama walked the Opening Lap at the San Pedro for the past twelve years. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 2014. She was loving and truly cared about everyone she met. She spread such joy that her light will be missed by all. The Viewing will be held at McNerney's Mortuary on Friday, March 17th starting at 4pm with a Vigil service at 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, March 18th at Noon at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in San Pedro. The interment will be private.
