Rudy Svorinich, Sr. Obituary

Rudy Svorinich, Sr. passed away on January 24, 2012. Born on September 2, 1924 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, he moved to San Pedro in January 1929 with his family at the age of 4 1/2. He was a very proud 82 year resident of San Pedro. He was the youngest of four children of Joseph and Mary (Mirkovich) Svorinich. He attended Fifteenth Street Elementary School, Dana Junior High School and was a Summer 1943 graduate of San Pedro High School. He served in the United States Navy during World War II from 1943 to 1946 being assigned overseas for 36 months. He was a Petty Officer, 2nd Class and was chief cook at both the San Diego and Pearl Harbor Naval Bases. Later, he was assigned to the USS Santa Ines, a surveillance vessel in the South Pacific theatre of operations. After the war, he returned home to San Pedro and became a commercial fisherman with his father, brothers and cousins. He fished on many local vessels, including his father's boats - the Long Island and Yankee Boy. In 1955, he became a longshoreman with ILWU Local 13. He was seriously injured three times on the waterfront and retired in 1975. In the late 1970's, he was active in parent advisory boards for both Dana Junior and San Pedro High Schools. He was a member of the ILWU Local 13 Pensioneers Group, the San Pedro Veterans of Foreign Wars, the San Pedro Elks Lodge, the Wednesday Senior Citizens Club and was a founding volunteer for the Mary Star Clothing Center for the Needy and the cook for Mary Star of the Sea Christian Care for the homeless for several years. He was the longest serving board member (over 50 years) of the Dalmatian-American Club of San Pedro serving as president from 1980-83. He later served for many years as president of Dalmatian-American, Inc., the property holding company for the club until his retirement just a few years ago. He was known for his happy-go-lucky demeanor, his singing voice and his wonderful cooking. Preceded in death by his parents; sister, Zorka Rengel; brothers, Andrew and Anton Zrini. He is survived by his wife of almost 60 years, Winifred (Winnie); son, former LA City Councilman Rudy, Jr. (Deann); grandchildren, Gregory Rudolph and Danielle Marie Svorinich; sisters-in-law, Daron and Violet Svorinich; brother-in-law, Jack (Vicki) Tomich; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 4 at 10:30am at Mary Star of the Sea Church. Interment will follow at Green Hills Memorial Park.
