Shirley was born in Santa Monica to Russell and Scharlotte McLennan, and she graduated from Fairfax High School in Los Angeles where she was an award-winning student and leader in Girl Scouts. In later years, she spent most of her time with her family, while volunteering many hours with the South Bay Literacy Council and the Children's Ministry at Hope Chapel in Hermosa Beach.
