Wilmington, CA. Thomas B. Ponce, 86, died Friday March 11, 2011 at 2:39pm at Torrance Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. He leaves behind his wife of 58 years, Rebecca (Mares) Ponce; 6 sons, Richard, 56, (Michelle); Fernando, 54 (Anita); Tommy, 53 (Martha); Joe 'Tony', 50 (Shirley); Michael, 48 (Cyndi); Mondo, 42 (Geri); 2 daughters, Catherine, 57 (James); Becky, 52; 28 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; sister, Lucy Garcia; and numerous nieces and nephews. Born December 11, 1924 in Amarillo, Texas, the 14th of 15 children of Eugenio and Catarina (Billalba) Ponce. He lived in Amarillo until joining the Army in 1943. Thomas served in the U.S. Army during World War II in the historically acclaimed 2nd Armored Division, "HELL ON WHEELS". He was one of the Patton Boys. He received 5 Battle Stars for his participation in the Invasion of Normandy, battles of Northern France, Rhineland, Central Europe and Ardennes. Received the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, Good Conduct Medal and the Belgium Fourragere with Colors of the Belgiam Croix de Guerre. After being Honorably Discharged from Service on December 13, 1945 after the end of the War, he did not return to Texas, however came to California instead and settled down in Wilmington, CA with his mom and younger sister, Lucy. Thomas worked in Construction most of his life until an injury on the job, requiring 3 cervical spine surgeries, forced him to retire in 1968. He had a passion for building and still oversaw the construction of many homes into 80 years of age. Thomas enjoyed the many gatherings at his home with his children and many grandchildren and his Legacy will be the strong family he leaves behind to carry on that strong family tradition and of all his accomplishments in life this was his greatest. He was surrounded by all these Loved ones until his last breath in this life. Services for Thomas will be on Thursday, March 17, 2011; All Souls Mortuary, 4400 Cherry Ave, Long Beach, CA.
