Thomas Michael Mullen

Rolling Hills Estates - Thomas Michael Mullen, native of St. Paul, Minnesota, passed away February 24th, 2016. He was born to George and Zita (McCollow) Mullen on November 19th, 1925. Tom joined the Navy during World War II. Following his military service, he earned an MBA and completed all but the dissertation for a Ph.D. in economics at the University of Minnesota. It was there he met his wife, Betty Lucille Osborn.

Tom taught economics for several years at Minnesota, then moved to South Bend, IN., to take a job with Studebaker. In 1958, Tom and family moved to the Chicago area where he worked as a management consultant for A.T. Kearney. In 1964, he took a job in finance at Rexall Drug & Chemical Co. (later Dart Industries) in Los Angeles to spend more time with his family. Tom retired from Dart as its CFO. One of his proudest accomplishments was leading the team at Dart that acquired the Duracell battery company.

Tom enjoyed travel, golf, bridge, reading, jazz, and his family. For 25 years, he and Betty rented a large cabin in Crestline at Thanksgiving and hosted a reunion for their family. Tom and Betty enjoyed the Monterey Jazz Festival for many years.

Tom volunteered at his church and the Palos Verdes Library. He and Betty were founding members of S.T.A.R. (Society to Aid Retarded). Tom served as its first President. They helped raise funds to establish three homes for developmentally disabled adults.

Tom was pre-deceased by his son, James Mullen. He is survived by his wife Betty, their children John, Susan, Dee, Greg, Jill, and Paul, and by grandchildren Chris, Marissa, Christy, Marie, Ben, Diana, and Will, and great-grandchildren Theron, Jaxon, Asher and Lyla Jane.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM on April 2nd, at St. John Fisher Church, at 5448 Crest Road, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275. The family requests no flowers or gifts, but encourages donations to S.T.A.R., at P.O Box 1075, Torrance, CA 90505. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
