Obituary Condolences

Thomas Virgil Sawyer

1926-2015

Thomas (Tom) Sawyer, a resident of the South Bay for many years, passed away at home in the early morning hours of January 8, 2015. Tom was born in Los Angeles to Joe and Jewel Sawyer on December 29, 1926 and had just recently celebrated his 88th birthday. Tom graduated from Manual Arts High School in Los Angeles, class of 1944. He was a part of the "Greatest Generation" having served in the United States Navy during World War II. Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, he pursued a career in the printing industry starting with an apprentice program affiliated with the International Typographical Union. His printing career progressed into management positions and in the mid to late 1970's he ended up owning his own typesetting business, VersaType, located in the Torrance area. He ended up retiring from the trade in the early 1990's. He was married on February 28,1948 to Betty Rickabaugh, a Gardena resident. The marriage produced two beautiful daughters but sadly neither reached an age of over 5 years due to cystic fibrosis. Tom was an avid sailor and he and his wife enjoyed sailing on their boat and spent many good times with their sailing friends over the years. Tom was a proud member in good standing as a Mason, belonging to the Beach Cities Lodge #753 F&AM. Tom is predeceased by his wife Betty in 2010, his daughters and parents. He is survived by several brothers and sisters in-law on Betty's side of the family along with numerous nieces and nephews. An acknowledgement goes out to a special person and friend of over 30 years in his and Betty's life, Yonnie Parker. As none of his aging family lived in the area, she was there to help him during his declining years and recent illness. Her caring ways will always be appreciated by Tom and his family. As per his wishes, there will be no services. He is in the care of Roosevelt Mortuary and Cemetery in Gardena where he was interred along with his dear wife, daughters and parents. May He Rest in Peace. Please sign the guestbook at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
