Captain Vernon Edwin Haselton

Captain Vernon Edwin Haselton, 90, died at his home on Tuesday, February 4, 2014 in Pleasanton, California. He was born to the late Theron Charles Haselton and Dorothy Knox Haselton, September 12, 1923 in Oakland, California. He graduated from high school in Oakland, attended Maritime school and married Elaine Marie Therese Andree in 1948. They resided in Oakland, Rancho Palos Verdes and then finally relocated to Pleasanton.

He came from a seagoing family, his father being a Chief engineer and builder of ships. His late brother Don worked for the US Navy. Captain Haselton was a US Merchant Marine Veteran having served aboard oceangoing merchant ships in service to the United States during World War II transporting oil through the Panama Canal to the Eastern Seaboard. Following the War he sailed as a captain for Standard Oil of California, transporting oil from Hawaii and Alaska to the West Coast. He served as Port Captain and Mooring Master in Los Angeles for Standard Oil being in charge of transferring oil from large oil tankers to smaller vessels and then to Southern California refineries.

Following retirement from Standard Oil in the 1980's, Vernon and Elaine were very active owning and operating Haselton Insurance Agency in the Oakland hills for thirty years and serving as volunteers, running the gift shop at Summit Medical Center on behalf of the Auxiliary for over twenty years.

He is survived by his wife, Elaine Haselton; children, Victoria Jadali, Martin Haselton, Susan Haas, Joseph Haselton; and grandchildren, Jarad and Eric Haselton, Sheri Haas, Celeste and Alecia Haselton; and great grandchild, Cameron Haselton. Please sign the guestbook
