Victor M. White Obituary
Victor M. White, a 42 year resident of Palos Verdes passed away peacefully on Saturday January 8, 2011 at the age of 89. He served in Europe during WWII as a communications engineer at the Battle of the Bulge and remained stationed in Germany after the war. Following his return to the states, he was the base communications officer at Randolph AFB near San Antonio, Texas, where he met and married Marian Giano in 1947. Vic had a distinguished career in the U.S. Air Force, earning a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering from Yale, and achieving the rank of Colonel before retiring in 1969. He participated in systems engineering on early missile defense and space programs, and notably was the first program manager of the Defense Support Program (DSP), the mainstay of the United States ballistic missile early warning system for the last forty years. He was awarded the Legion of Merit for his work in this program and development of the 949 satellite system program. After leaving the Air Force, Vic worked for Hughes Aircraft, Space and Communications, where he served as a manager for advanced systems development, and worked on many nationally important programs. Vic was an active volunteer at St. John Fisher Church, The South Coast Botanic Gardens and Recording for the Blind. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Marian White of Palos Verdes, CA; son, Douglas White of Mammoth, CA; son, Victor (Jill) White of Long Beach, CA; daughter, Judy (Larry) Caudillo of San Diego, CA; son, Paul White of Cloverdale, CA; daughter, Susan (Bill) Klahr of Redondo Beach CA; 10 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. He was preceded by his parents, Bernard and Pauline White; and daughter, Kathleen. A gathering of family and friends will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Wednesday, January 12, 2011 from 5pm - 8pm. The Service will be held at St. James Catholic Church in Redondo Beach on Thursday, January 13 at 10am. Private burial will follow. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the .
