Virginia Lee Slonecker Obituary
Virginia Lee Slonecker

September 21, 1931 - April 16, 2016

Virginia Lee Slonecker, age 84, of Sevierville, Tennessee, passed away on the morning of April 16, 2016, in the presence of loved ones. Virginia was born September 21, 1931, in Hartford, Arkansas. She was affectionately known as "Ginny" and later as "Nana" by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her family moved to San Pedro, California in the 1930s and later moved to Walteria, a neighborhood in Torrance, California. She attended Torrance High School. Bill and Virginia lived near each other and fell in love during the summer of 1949. They married on May 7, 1950, in Las Vegas and remained life-long best friends throughout their marriage of 66 years. They provided a loving home for their children, Pamela, Marta, and Mark. She was extremely supportive of her husband's 31-year career as a firefighter with the Torrance Fire Department and proud of his appointment to Fire Chief. Ginny loved playing tennis and became an accomplished competitor in the Southern California municipal circuit for many years. She and Bill toured Europe and the Mediterranean. She developed a love of "flow-blue" china, which influenced her fine sense of home décor. Virginia had an inviting and vivacious personality and was always fun to be around. Her laughter filled the rooms during family gatherings, which she graciously hosted with great attention to detail. It was a pleasure to spend time with her. Bill and Virginia moved to the Great Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee to enjoy its four seasons and natural beauty during the last 20 years of their marriage. They loved to drive their RV to New England, visiting sites along the way. Favorite destinations included Williamsburg, Virginia, and the Amish settlements in Lancaster County, PA, where they enjoyed the history and shopping together. Ginny enjoyed spending time with her neighbors Mary "Nelle" McCroskey, Velma Orrick, Buddy and Kathy Kuykendall, Jerry and Helene Grimes, Sam and Theresa Comodari, Marie Ramby, and Jean Brown (all residing in Savannah Glen in Sevierville). Virginia was a daughter, sister, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend who will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.

Virginia is survived by her husband, Billy C. Slonecker; daughter and son-in-law, Pamela and Kirk Jensen of Torrance, CA; daughter and son-in-law, Marta and Jon Stark of Torrance, CA; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Linda Slonecker of Kennesaw, GA; brother-in-law, Tom Trollan; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ettore and Nell Crovella, and her sisters, Katherine Sprayberry, Marian Trollan, and Clara Gipe. A memorial celebration is being planned for a future date. Her cremation took place on April 18, 2016, at Atchley Funeral Home in Sevierville. Those who wish to donate to Ginny's favorite charity, the American Diabetes Foundation, can do so in her honor.
