Virginia "Darlene" Skelly Obituary
February 28, 1922 - July 27, 2011A lifetime resident of the South Bay, Darlene or "Queenie" as many of us affectionately called her, was born in Los Angeles. She had many fond childhood memories of days spent at the Redondo Beach Pier, where her mother and aunt owned a dress shop. In1942, she and the love of her life, James Skelly, eloped to Yuma, Arizona. In later years they enjoyed traveling, especially cruises, and visited many interesting parts of the world. Darlene retired from El Camino College in 1978 where she had worked for 17 years. She had many hobbies, including needlework, crossword puzzles, watching old movies and was a voracious reader. Because of her deep love for animals, she made contributions to many organizations benefiting them. Darlene was preceded in death by her husband of 56 years, James Skelly, and her grand-daughter, Katie Skelly. She is survived by her son, Tony (Carol) Skelly; her daughter, Cheryl (Gene) Ito; and five loving grand-children, Anthony, Anna, Mary, Alison and Amanda. Not to be left out is her beloved three-legged cat Pee Wee, whom she called her perfect companion. A family Celebration of Life is being planned.
