Vivian Rakocija Obituary
Vivian Rakocija

Vivian was born in Long Beach on May 24, 1943. She was raised a proud and active member of the San Pedro community, graduating from San Pedro High School in 1961 and living there her entire life. She was a graduate of Long Beach State and studied abroad at the Sorbonne University in Paris. A committed and respected high school Spanish and French teacher of nearly 40 years in the Palos Verdes School District, she was also fluent in her parents' native Croatian language, a cultural influence whose deeps roots enriched her throughout her life and was a great source of pride. Like her father and uncle before her, she was a member of the Dalmatian - American Club of San Pedro and had longstanding ties to the local Croatian community. An adoring mother and grandmother, Vivian enjoyed opening up her home to others, hosting countless meals for friends and family alike. She also loved traveling to Europe, going to plays and musicals, trying new restaurants, watching and supporting independent film, championing political activism as well as enjoying the therapeutic laughter that was born of time spent with her sons and longtime friends. She was fiercely supportive of her children and their passions and growth as human beings and, in recent years, loved nothing more than to dote on and spoil her granddaughter. Vivian passed away peacefully on the afternoon of August 17, 2016, surrounded by her family. They loved her very much and will strive to keep her spirit and memory alive. She is survived by her loving sons Lucas and Mathew, ex-husband Vito, daughter-in-law Amy, granddaughter Ava, puggle Max, an extended Croatian family both domestic and abroad, as well as numerous lifelong and adoring friends. Visitation is scheduled for 5-8 pm on Thursday, August 25th at McNerney's Mortuary in San Pedro. The funeral service will take place at 10:30 am on Friday, August 26th at Mary Star of the Sea Church in San Pedro, followed by a burial at Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes. In lieu of flowers, the family ask that you donate to The William H. Isacoff, M.D. Research Foundation for Gastrointestinal Cancer, 10921 Wilshire Blvd. #505, Los Angeles, CA 90024.
