In Loving Memory Of Walter W. Voss
Walter Voss, a Torrance resident of more than 40 years, passed away peacefully in his home October 16, 2014. Born October 30, 1909, in Hamburg, Germany, to Hans Voss and Frieda Puhlmann Voss, Walter attended grammar school before moving to Chicago, IL in May, 1923. A high school graduate in 1928, Walter returned to Germany for one year to assist his grandparents (Wilhelm/Gertrude Puhlmann) in their beer dispenser manufacturing business. In 1929, Walter began Engineering college classes. During the summer of 1933, Walter was a tour guide at the World Fair in Chicago. In the summers of 1934-35, he was a camp counselor for young men in Wisconsin. Walter married Helen Barber in 1938, in Chicago, where the happy couple resided for 15 years. In 1943, Walter graduated from the University of Chicago with an Engineering Degree. His career included positions at Honeywell Corporation, Cardux Corporation, Indiana General, Bernard Corporation and Electronic Memories, Inc. One of Walter's designs was awarded a U.S. Patent. In the 1950's, Walter and Helen moved from Chicago to Philadelphia and subsequently to Red Bank, New Jersey. In 1970, they moved to Torrance, California. After retiring from his engineering profession in 1976, Walter traveled the world as a tour guide from 1977-1988. He was active in the South Bay German Club, Adult Continuing Education and Redondo Beach Spiritual Center Church. His beloved wife, Helen, passed away in 1991. Walter led a full life of international travel, volunteering in his community and visiting friends until passing at nearly 105 years of age. He leaves a legacy of wisdom, humor and unconditional love for all. His Memorial Service will be held at Green Hills Chapel, 27501 S.
