Obituary Condolences

Wayne Frederick Schafer
1921 - 2011

Wayne was born October 6, 1921 on a farm near Marshall, Illinois. He was one of five children born to Daniel C. Schafer and Cecil A. Blockinger Schafer. Raised on the farm, he left as a young man to find work in Danville, Illinois, where he met the love of his life, Norma Jeanne Craig. Wayne and Norma were married in Robinson, Illinois on April 18, 1942 and were married for 62 years before her passing in 2004. He served in the Pacific during WWII on the U.S.S. Frederick Funston as an Electrician's Mate. After the war he attended college and graduated in 1953 from the University of Illinois, with a B. S. in Electrical Engineering. Wayne brought his wife, Norma, and five children to California in 1958. They settled in Torrance where he lived for the rest of his life. He worked for McDonnell Douglas Astronautics, then at the Department of Water and Power for the City of Burbank, until his retirement at age 65. Wayne was preceded in death by his loving wife, Norma and his beautiful daughter, Judy Edmondson (Ray). He is survived by his sons, Jon (Emily), Steven (Cindy), and David; his daughter, Jeanne Fredericks; seven grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and two sisters. At 90 years of age Wayne took 2-3 mile walks several times a week, traveled, kept his mind active with crossword puzzles, and even went bowling (and bowled two games!) shortly before Thanksgiving. He lived a happy, healthy life until very shortly before he passed peacefully, surrounded by family, on December 14. Wayne is loved dearly and will be missed deeply by all who knew him. Services will be held Wednesday, December 21, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Halverson, Stone & Myers Mortuary, 1223 Cravens Avenue, Torrance, CA followed by interment at Pacific Crest Cemetery, Redondo Beach, CA. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The , 816 S. Figueroa St., Los Angeles, CA 90017. Please sign the guest book at www.dailybreeze.com/obits.
