William Stephen Short

William ("Bill") Stephen Short, 91, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 29, 2016 at his home in Redondo Beach, California, in the loving arms of his beloved wife of 66 years, Phyllis. Bill was born on April 26, 1924 in Syracuse, New York to Stephen and Frances (Johnson) Short. After graduating high school in 1942, he entered the U.S. Army Air Corp where he served as a B24 navigator in the 15th Air Force. Bill flew 35 combat missions in the European Theater of World War II and he was awarded the Air Medal with 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, 2 Bronze Stars and a Distinguished Presidential Unit Citation. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. Bill attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York; he studied aeronautical engineering and graduated with honors in 1950.
Bill was married to Phyllis Hassett in 1949 in Troy, New York. They moved to the South Bay in 1954 and together they raised one son and two daughters. Bill and Phyllis enjoyed traveling together as well as spending time with family and friends. Bill was an aerospace engineer at Hughes Aircraft in El Segundo for 30 years, and was most proud of his contribution to the Surveyor unmanned moon-lander project. After retiring, he generously volunteered time to charity work in the South Bay, notably the Meals on Wheels Program for the Salvation Army.
Bill is also survived by his son Michael (Chris) and daughters Pauline (John) Genter and Karen (Joe) Neil; eight adoring grandchildren; and many loving nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held on Thursday, February 4 at 10:00 am at St. Lawrence Martyr Church, 1900 S. Prospect Ave., Redondo Beach, 90277. All attending are invited to join the family for a celebration of Bill's life in the Parrish Hall after the mass. The burial will follow at Green Hills Cemetery, 27501 S. Western Ave., Rancho Palos Verdes.
