Winnifred Estella Schmitz

November 17, 1922 - January 8, 2012

Winnie passed away in hospice on January 8, 2012 at the age of 89. She was born in Coventry, Rhode Island. She was a Civil Defense Air Warden before the war and in 1942 she joined the US Coast Guard. Her boot training was in New York. She went to Yeoman School in Okalahoma and then transferred to Hawaii where she spent two years. In 1944, she became a Second Class Yeoman. She serviced in the Coast Guard until 1945. In February of 1949, she married Paul Schmitz and in 1951 they came to Torrance, California where they would raise their two daughters. Winnie worked for Torrance School District and retired there with 15 years of employment. She also volunteersed at Christ the King Church where she taught Sunday school for many years. Square dancing was one of her many joys. In 1977, she joined King Squares where she danced until 2005. Winnie will be missed by many friends and her loving family. She is survived by her husband, Paul Schmitz; daughters, Linda Sena and Sandra Schmitz-Burrell; granddaughters, Heidi Wright and Korrie Bruce; grandson, Kurt Nealy Sr., Marc Burrell, and Geoff Burrell; great grandsons, Kurt Nealy II, Austin Bruce, and Jonathan Wright; great granddaughter, Lily Bruce; sisters, Myrtle Craig of Rhode Island and June Fischer of Mississippi; and brothers, LeRoy Moore and Clarence Moore, both from Rhode Island. A Memorial Service will be held at 11am on Saturday, February 11 at Christ the King Church, 2706 W. 182nd St. in Torrance, California. Reception will immediately follow service.
