Kenneth "Kenny" Olen Barber
May 1930 - October 2013
Kenny was born in Canadaigua, New York, and moved to Los Angeles when he was a child. He attended high school in Los Angeles, where he met his future wife, Dorothy Goldsberry. In 1948 Kenny enlisted in the Navy and served as an airman in Alaska. He was discharged in 1950, and married Dorothy in 1952. Ken and Dorothy purchased a home in Torrance, where they raised their two sons. Kenny had a long and successful career in gunite construction, and built many familiar structures: the California aqueduct, Disneyland's Matterhorn, NASA launch pads, and many others too numerous to list. He also served as the president of his labor union for many years.As a young man, Kenny enjoyed scuba diving, and was one of Los Angeles' first certified divers. He also loved boating, fishing, and gardening, and grew many fruits and vegetables. Later, Kenny and Dorothy became interested in gold prospecting, and spent more than 25 summers with the GPAA at the Cripple River Mining Camp in Nome, Alaska. Kenny is survived by his son Kim (Susan Barber), son Kerry (Victoria Barber), grandsons Daniel Barber and Sean Barber, and granddaughters Katherine Barber, Amie Barber, and Elyse Van Tuyl. The Memorial Service will be held at Rice Mortuary in Torrance on Sunday November 3, 2013 at 1pm. A Reception follows in the Lighthouse Room until 4pm.
