Arthur Estin Obituary

Arthur John Estin died at home on November 26, 2020 at the age of 93. He lived a full and vibrant life. Born in New York City, he spent most of his childhood on a farm in Roosevelt, New Jersey, a community created during the Depression to resettle unemployed garment workers. Art graduated from The Cooper Union in 1949 and joined the National Bureau of Standards first in Washington DC and then in Colorado Springs in 1951. When the NBS opened new labs in Boulder in 1954, Art became one of the first scientists. While working there, he earned his MS and PhD in physics and electrical engineering at the University of Colorado. Art's work in precision measurements of large antennae performance, satellite communication systems, and radio and plasma physics took him all over the world. After retiring from the NBS in 1980, Art became a partner at the Cyberlink Corporation where he worked on various national and international projects. Art was a renaissance man with many skills and interests, especially in the sciences and classics. He was passionate about classical music and opera. He designed and built two homes, one in Paonia and one in Fraser, which the family still uses and loves. Art was an enthusiastic outdoorsman, technical rock climber, backcountry skier, pilot, and scuba diver, and he backpacked all over the world. Art was a born teacher who loved sharing his knowledge, skills and wisdom. He believed strongly in honesty, generosity, hard work, and caring for others. Art was survived by his wife of 27 years, Madeline Cass Estin; his children Charles in Maui, HI, James in Iowa City, IA (married to Ann), and Linda in Israel (married to Norman Hirschel); 13 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his daughter Barbara in 2016; two wives: Edith Davidson Estin in 1987 and Roberta Jarmel Estin in 1990; and his brother Robert in 1986. Art was also close to a large circle of family members including three stepdaughters, Anne, Caitlin, and Emily McDonnell. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Donations in memory of Art can be made to ACLU of Colorado or Tru Hospice Community Care in Lafayette, Colorado.

I always really enjoyed time with Art. He was a very good friend of our family. My parents, June and Ed Sampson, had many exciting times with him on variouse adventures. He was an all round great guy. I remember once he said- "It's the little things in life that can get to you. You can sit on a mountain but you can't sit on a tack!"

Art had a wonderful twinkle. His mind was always two steps a head of everybody else’s. This man had an inspiring “can do” attitude, he would always set my mind awhilrling. He was still climbing tall ladders and designing and building imaginative projects, reading challenging books and was never afraid of pursuing his dreams. He seemed to know everybody and everything about Boulder, where from his kitchen window, he could read the papers and see it all it is my honor, good luck and privilege to know Art. He always inspired, coaxed and convinced me to think ahead, then just do it! I’m gonna miss you Art. Thank you mentoring me and coming into my life. Blessings to your family.
