Jim Hult Obituary
James Michael Hult, known as Jim to his family and friends, died of natural causes on July 27, 2018 at home. Jim was born on July 15, 1951 in Denver, Colorado to James A. Hult and Elaine N. Hult, but spent most of his youth in Casper, Wyoming and Golden, Colorado. Jim graduated from Golden High School and attended the University of Colorado at Boulder, where he obtained a B.S. in business and was an officer of Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He later obtained his law degree from CU, as well. Jim came of age during the 1960s, a time of radical social, political, and economic change, all of which he embraced. Like many in his generation, Jim lived with a sense of purpose and joy, rejected conventional norms, and pushed boundaries. Jim was the classic bon vivant: he loved good company, vigorous dancing, closing down bars, and boisterous conversations. Jim squeezed more out of life than most. Jim was an accomplished trial lawyer who used his legal education to fight for justice, often representing the underdogs, the dispossessed, and the indigent. He was generous to a fault and donated countless hours of his time to helping those in need of legal help. Jim was very active in the Colorado bar, serving as an officer in the Boulder County Bar Association and the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association. Jim was naturally athletic and enjoyed being active and outdoors. He loved rafting and surfing and stood out as a fearless skier with a love of moguls and cliffs. Off the hill, Jim played in numerous amateur basketball leagues around the state and could often be found playing pick-up basketball for hours, outrunning and outplaying people half his age. For nearly 30 years, Jim was married to Stephanie Smith Hult (of Boulder), whom he met in college. Jim and Stephanie put each other through law school and, for many years, practiced law together in Boulder, becoming a successful husband/wife trial duo. Jim and Stephanie divorced in 2005 but remained close. Jim and Stephanie had a daughter, Caroline Hult, whom they taught to be smart and fearless like them. Caroline lives in Boulder with her husband, Elliott Hood, and their son, Alden Hood. In addition to his ex-wife, grandson. and daughter, Jim leaves behind brothers Robin and Kelly Hult and his partner Nancy Young. Jim's family and friends will be celebrating his life on August 19, 2018 from 3:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the University of Colorado Koenig Alumni Center (1202 University Avenue, Boulder, Colorado 80302).
