Mary Lind Obituary

Mary Dungan Lind was born in Lovell, WY on November 3, 1923 to Donald Clair and Anna Maria (Rebar) Dungan. She was preceded in death by her husband of nearly 70 years, David Arthur Lind, on March 6, 2015 and by her three older siblings, Douglas D. Dungan, William O. Dungan and Anna D. Gallagher. She is survived by her children, Catherine (Stuart) Paxton of Arlington, WA, Margaret (Scott) Sanders of Albuquerque, NM, John (Elisabeth) Lind of Boulder, and Christopher (Melissa) Lind of Nashville, TN, seven grandchildren and two great grandsons. She passed away peacefully on December 28, 2016 with her son John by her side. Born Mary Frances Dungan, she graduated valedictorian of her high school class in Lovell, WY and moved to Seattle, WA where she met her future husband, Dave, during WWII. While Dave completed his studies and post-doctoral fellowships as a physicist, they lived in Pasadena, CA, Stockholm, Sweden and Zurich, Switzerland from 1945-1951. They lived in Madison, WI from 1951-1956 and moved to Boulder in 1956 with their four young children. Mary lived in Boulder, with brief stints in Maryland, Japan and India, nearly continuously until her death. After raising her children, Mary returned to college and received her Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Colorado in 1980. She worked in elementary education as a teacher's aide and teacher intermittently in the Boulder Valley School system. An avid reader and lover of music, Mary was always reading, playing the piano and singing during her free time. She was a long time participant in local book clubs and the local Democratic Party. She and Dave were members of the First Congregational Church for more than 50 years, where Mary sang in the church choir. After a childhood growing up during the Depression in rural Wyoming, Mary was passionate about issues related to social justice and the positive influence that local and federal government may have in everyone's lives. She was actively involved in local politics and public policy. She encouraged all of her friends and family to be well-read, informed and independent critical thinkers. Mary enriched the lives and challenged the minds of all who knew her well. The family plans a small memorial service in the next few months.
