Richard Jones Obituary

Dr. Richard Jones passed away peacefully Feb.23,2021. Dick was a respected academic serving as a professor of Biology at CU Boulder from 1969 until 1998. During his years at CU he taught Human Anatomy, Biology of Human Reproduction, and Vertebrate Reproduction among others. He was a popular lecturer and won an Excellence in Teaching Award from the College of Arts and Sciences as well as receiving a Teacher Recognition Award from SOAR. He trained and mentored numerous graduate and undergraduate students in his Laboratory of Comparative Reproduction. He published many scientific journal articles dealing with fishes, amphibians, reptiles and birds. He also authored two important scientific books and wrote a successful text book. Dick had a love of fly fishing from his youth. His favorite place in the world was wading in a river full of trout with his fly rod, his pipe clenched in his teeth. He was also a die-hard sports fan, rooting for CU Football, Basketball, and the Broncos. He loved cars and music and teaching. After his retirement he led nature hikes through the City of Boulder and delighted in sharing his vast store of knowledge about plants, birds, fish and lizards. Above all he was a devoted husband, father and brother. He leaves behind his wife Betty Jones and his four sons Christopher Jones, Peter Jones, Ryan Hibbard Jones, and Evan Jones. They were the joy of his life. He also leaves daughters in law Dana Jones, Meghan Conway and Eve Jones as well as grandchildren Annabelle, Serafina and Luke. He loved his sisters, Dorill Thompson and Melissa Brown. He will always be remembered for his warmth, his kindness and his wonderful sense of humor.
