James J. Zuniga Obituary
James J. Zuniga, beloved father, son, brother and firefighter, left this world on Jan. 2, at the age of 59. Better known as Jim or Jimmy to his family and friends, he was born on July 24, 1959 and was a lifelong Woodland resident.He had a passion for his community and demonstrated a commitment to service early on by becoming a Woodland Fire Cadet at age 13. At 22, he began his fire services career working for the Florin Fire Department for two years, and later joined Woodland Fire Department, where he served for 28 years. He retired from Woodland Fire Department with 30 years of fire service. He was actively involved in the community once retired, serving on the Yolo County Grand Jury and as a member of the Yolo County Health Council, as well as continuing to teach EMT classes at Solano Community College. Many of the students he taught at Solano and Woodland Community College would later serve alongside him as firefighters. Jim will be remembered for his kindness, his humor and his loyalty. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.He is survived by his five children, Alicia, Zachary, Nicholas, Lucas, and Joel Zuniga; six siblings, Stella Wilson, Cecilia (Jose) Coronado, Helen Zuniga, Ralph (Connie) Fuentes, Linda (Greg) Fuentes Brida and Lupe (Linda) Fuentes; mother, Victoria Cordova; his partner, Bonnie Soriano, and her daughters, Morgan and Kendall; his ex-wife and mother of his children, Mary Ludovina, and numerous nieces and nephews.The family is deeply grateful to the staff of Woodland Memorial Hospital's ER and ICU, as well as Dr. Wu, for providing excellent care to Jim and amazing support to the family. They would also like to thank the Woodland firefighter community for their unwavering support during this difficult time.A Rosary will take place at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, 301 Walnut St., Woodland. Services will take place at 10:30 a.m., also on Jan. 15 at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. A memorial reception will take place immediately following the ceremony at Fire Station 3, 1550 Springlake Court, Woodland, until 2 p.m.In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Jim's name to the Woodland Professional Firefighters Association.
