Janet Lou Nichols-Darghty, 73, died on Sunday March 23, 2008, in Sacramento. Born in Merced on Oct. 6, 1934, to Harry and Ada (Morain) Gillette, she attended Merced schools prior to the family moving to Yolo County where she was a graduate of Esparto High School, class of 1952. As a librarian for more than 20 years, Mrs. Darghty worked for Lindas Bible Bookstore in Watsonville, Volunteers of America, Yolo Wayfarer Center, and most recently Loaves and Fishes in Sacramento up until her retirement in 2007. A longtime member of the Church of the Nazarene, she was a volunteer of prison ministries for more than 25 years. She is survived by her husband of 17 years, Phillip Darghty; daughters, Marie Umbay, Erin Heulitt and husband Mark of Camarillo; sons, Bryce Nichols and wife Debbie, Chuck Nichols and wife Lynda, Rick Nichols, and Preston Nichols and wife Angie. She also leaves 22 grandchildren and 18 great grandchildren.
Services: A graveside service is scheduled for 11 a.m., Friday, March 28, at the Capay Cemetery, 24727 County Road 22 in Esparto with Pastor Ray Sanders officiating, with a memorial service to follow at the Church of the Nazarene Celebration Center, 100 Woodland Ave. in Woodland at noon. Memorial contributions may be directed to Loaves and Fishes in her memory. Assisting the family with funeral arrangements is Evergreen Funeral Service of Woodland.
