Kathleen Joyce "Kathy" Dowell Obituary
1934 - 2018 Kathleen Joyce Dowell went peacefully home to be with her Lord on Jan. 22. She was 83 years old. Kathy was born to Albert and Wilhelmina "Minnie" Fiedler on Aug. 10, 1934 in Java, SD. She graduated from Woodland High School in 1952 and went on to work for the Yolo County Welfare Department and as a dental assistant before meeting her future husband of 60 years, Raymond "Pudge" Dowell. They were married on July 13, 1957 and made their home in Woodland. A lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Kathy was active in the church choir and Sunday Bible study groups as well as serving as church secretary for a number of years. Possessing a natural gift for music, she had a great singing voice and played the piano by ear. After her children were grown, she went to work for the Woodland Joint Unified School District for 16 years as an Instructional Aide. Devoted to her job, she loved working with children, particularly those who seemed to need a little extra compassion and attention. She also loved playing softball and played on several women's league teams well into her late 50's. Kathy loved the Oakland A's, the outdoors and tending her garden, a glass of good wine with friends, and long walks with friends and family along the country roads near her home. A passionate animal lover, she rescued and cared for animals of all kinds over the years. Her authentic, kind and generous nature touched all who knew her. Although she battled Alzheimer's disease for the last 10 years of her life, the disease never robbed her of her sweet nature and beautiful smile. Above all else, Kathy loved her family. A devoted mother and homemaker, she was always there for her children and grandchildren and made it a priority to be involved in all of her children's school and extracurricular activities throughout their young lives. Kathy was preceded in death by her parents, Albert and Wilhelmina Fiedler; two brothers, Duane and Raymond Fiedler; and two sisters, LaVerne Robinson and Elaine Darnell. She is survived by her husband, Raymond "Pudge" Dowell; her daughters, Robin Dowell and Erin Lopez (Sergio), and her son, Timothy Dowell; beloved grandchildren, Savanna, Fletcher, Avonlea and Cameo Dowell; her brother, Darrel (Judy) Fiedler, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the at www.alz.org, or to the donor's favorite charity. Kathleen's family would also like to express heartfelt thanks to her amazing care team at St. John's Retirement Village-Manor West, and to everyone from Yolo Hospice who took such wonderful care of her during her final year of life. A memorial service will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 625 W. Gibson Road, Woodland, on Saturday, Feb. 17, at 11 a.m., with a reception to follow in the church fellowship hall.
